Text Box: Varicose veins can be more than just unsightly, they can be an early indication of problems to come. Varicose and spider veins are caused by venous reflux. If this is untreated, it can lead to bigger problems, such as leg pain, swelling, or even open wounds. Women of childbearing age and older are the most likely to suffer from varicose and spider veins, but they can affect men and women at any age. Venous valves direct blood from the legs back to the heart, but when the valves stop working the blood can flow backwards to the legs, resulting in stagnation and pooling. This can stretch the veins, leading to the characteristic varicose and spider veins. Often spider veins are a cosmetic nuisance, but at times they may cause leg pain. Large varicose veins can cause pain, discomfort, and swelling, and often leave people with a feeling of heavy, tired legs. These often require treatment.
